This estate Carrera y Carrera ring in 18 karat yellow gold sets an oval ruby cabochon between two sculpted panthers. The cats stretch along the band from opposite sides, front paws braced against the stone as if each one is laying claim to it.
Carrera y Carrera traces its roots to a Madrid workshop founded in 1885 and is known for animals and figures modeled in gold like small sculptures. Its signature is the contrast between matte and polished gold. Here the panthers have a soft satin finish that reads as fur and muscle, while the band is polished bright. Run a fingertip across the ring and you can feel where one finish ends and the other begins.
The ruby sits in a bezel, a smooth rim of gold that wraps the entire edge of the stone and protects a cabochon's rounded sides better than prongs would.
