A single round diamond, set in a white-toned lozenge plate, centers this oval black onyx ring in 9-karat yellow gold from the 1940s. Six prongs hold the polished onyx tablet, and the shank opens into grooved shoulders beneath the head. Onyx is a variety of chalcedony, and its name comes from the Greek word for fingernail. Set lengthwise along a slim band, the dark oval lengthens the look of the finger and wears easily every day.
