Thirteen pear-shaped opal cabochons flash green, blue, and orange across this 1960s 17-karat gold pendant brooch. The gold is deeply textured and sculptural, built up in overlapping ridged sections that open into a pierced, organic lattice. Seven round brilliant-cut diamonds are prong-set between the opals, adding scattered points of brightness across the surface. Opal's play of color comes from microscopic silica spheres inside the stone that diffract light. A bale on the reverse doubles the piece as a pendant, so it can be worn pinned to a lapel or slid onto a chain.
